Caring for your Curtains

Hanging your curtains
Curtains and Valances

On unpacking your curtains or valance
there may be some creases or
pressure marks. These will normally
fall out quickly after hanging in a warm
room. Alternatively, the curtains or
valance (except velvets) may be lightly
ironed with a warm dry iron on the
reverse side (hems and sides should
not be pressed). Steam or excessive
pressure or temperature should be
avoided as these can stretch or shrink
the fabric.

Velvets
Velvet pile is prone to flattening during
transit or cleaning which can show as
patches of darker and lighter shade.
These marks will usually disappear
when the curtains have been hung but
it may be necessary to assist by
careful steaming (with a kettle) and
brushing upwards to lift the pile.
Velvet should always be dry cleaned
and never ironed.

Pencil Pleat Tape
The cords on Pencil Pleat tape must
be tied at either end before the
headings can be gathered.

Caring for your curtains

Cleaning
Recommended cleaning instructions
for each fabric are shown on the
website. Simply select the relevant
fabric to see the care instructions.
Please note these care instructions
relate to the fabric and unlined
curtains only. All lined or trimmed
products should always be dry
cleaned.

Shrinkage
For washable fabrics a shrinkage of
up to 5% may occur if washing
instructions are followed. To reduce
the possibility, washable fabrics
should be hand-washed, drip dried
and ironed in a lengthways direction
before fully dry. Shrinkage in any
fabric can be minimised if your
curtains are dry cleaned.

Your curtains are a very expensive
part of your furnishings and should
be kept pristine and in their original
condition by regular dry cleaning.
Curtains collect a lot of household
dust and odours not only from the
inside of your home but also from
the outside, especially when your
windows are open.

Smoke and nicotine from cigarettes
also damage and break the delicate
fabrics of your curtains. If you smoke
in your home, you should consider
having your curtains cleaned every
six months.
Sunlight can damage
your curtains and especially your
linings. In extreme cases where a
window is exposed to the sun all day,
it will not only fade your curtains but
severely break down the fibres
causing them to tear.
Also examine
your swags, tails and pelmets to see
how much dust has collected on the
surfaces.
